Sound Not Working on Windows: How to Fix It

Sound Not Working on Windows: How to Fix It

By Tech Mart | Category - Tech Trends

Summary: No sound on your Windows PC or laptop? Try these 9 simple fixes, from volume checks to driver updates, and get your audio back.

You press play on a video, and nothing comes out. No music, no voice, no notification sounds. It is a common problem on Windows PCs and laptops, and it is usually not as serious as it feels.

Here are 9 practical fixes, ordered from easiest to hardest. Try them one by one and test your sound after each step. The menu paths below are for Windows 10 and Windows 11, and some names may look slightly different on your version.

1. Check the volume, mute button, and connections

Start with the simple things, because they cause more problems than you might expect.

  • Make sure the volume is up and nothing is muted, both on the taskbar and on your keyboard or speaker.
  • If you use speakers or headphones, check that the cable is fully plugged into the correct jack.
  • For Bluetooth devices, confirm they are turned on and connected.

If you have another pair of headphones or speakers, test with them too. This tells you whether the problem is the device or the PC.

2. Choose the right sound output device

Windows may be sending sound to the wrong place, such as a monitor or a disconnected Bluetooth device.

  1. Open Settings → System → Sound.
  2. Under the output section, pick the speakers or headphones you want to use.
  3. Play a sound and check whether the volume bar moves.

If the bar moves but you hear nothing, the problem is likely outside the PC (cable, speaker, or headphones).

3. Restart your computer

A restart clears many small, temporary glitches. Save your work, restart the PC, and test the sound again.

It sounds basic, but it fixes a surprising number of audio problems.

4. Run the Windows audio troubleshooter

Windows has a built-in tool that checks for common sound problems and tries to fix them for you. On Windows 11, Microsoft points users to an automated audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app. On Windows 10, you can search for "troubleshoot" in the Start menu and look for the audio or sound option, though the exact location can vary by version.

Follow the on-screen prompts and test your sound afterward.

5. Check the volume mixer for individual apps

Sometimes the whole system volume is fine, but one app is turned down or muted.

  • Open Settings → System → Sound and look for the Volume mixer (on some versions, it appears as "App volume and device preferences").
  • Check that your browser, media player, or game is not set to zero.

Raise the volume for that app and test again.

6. Install pending Windows updates

Microsoft's own sound troubleshooting guide lists Windows Update as a step, because outdated or faulty drivers can cause hardware problems, and updates may include driver fixes.

  1. Open Settings → Windows Update (on Windows 10: Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update).
  2. Click Check for updates.
  3. Install anything available and restart the PC.

Make sure your files are saved before you restart.

7. Restart the Windows audio services

Windows uses background services to run sound. If one of them has stopped, you may get no audio. I am fairly confident about the names below, but check them on your own PC.

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Audio in the list.
  3. Right-click it and choose Restart. If it is not running, choose Start.

Do the same for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder if you see it. Do not change other services you do not recognize.

8. Update, roll back, or reinstall the audio driver

A driver is the small piece of software that lets Windows talk to your sound hardware. Driver problems are a common reason for missing sound. Before you change drivers, it is a good idea to create a restore point so you can undo the change if something goes wrong.

  1. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click your audio device and choose Update driver, then let Windows search automatically.

If the sound stopped right after an update, open the device's Properties, go to the Driver tab, and look for Roll Back Driver. If that does not help, you can uninstall the device and restart the PC, and Windows will usually try to install it again.

9. Install the manufacturer's driver or check the hardware

If the steps above did not work, go to your PC or laptop maker's support website and download the latest audio driver for your exact model. Microsoft also recommends this step. Microsoft additionally describes using the generic audio driver that comes with Windows as an option, which you can try from Device Manager if you are comfortable with it.

If the sound still does not work after all of this, and it also fails on other speakers or headphones, there may be a hardware fault. At that point, a technician or service center should check it.

Final Thoughts

Most sound problems on Windows come from simple settings, the wrong output device, or driver issues. Start with the easy checks, move on to updates and services, and leave driver changes for later. Test your sound after each step so you know what fixed it.

If your PC or laptop has constant audio problems, it may be time to look at a newer device or better speakers and headphones.
