Starlink in Bangladesh: Opportunities, Benefits, and Risks

Starlink is now working in Bangladesh. But they don’t want to serve only local users. The company plans to use Bangladesh as a transit hub to provide internet to neighboring countries like Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

They want to build a large ground station and have proposed to BTRC that foreign traffic will pass through Bangladesh. The important point: this link will have no filtering or blocking. Starlink wants unfiltered IP or IPLC traffic.

Starlink’s Presence in Bangladesh

Starlink officially launched its service in Bangladesh in May 2025, For more details. Local users are growing fast. To ensure good service, Starlink has set up ground stations:

  • Kaliakrore Hi-Tech Park: 4 stations
  • Rajshahi: 2 stations
  • Jessore: 1 station

Now, Starlink plans to build the world’s largest ground station in Gazipur. They have asked BTSC for permission to send data to neighboring countries through Bangladesh. This link will have no government filtering or blocking.

Benefits for Bangladesh

If Starlink provides internet to Bhutan or Nepal through Bangladesh, the country can earn money from data transport, like India or Singapore.

  • Bangladesh could become the satellite internet hub of South Asia.
  • The country could be branded as an “internet gateway nation”.
  • Local users will get faster internet, as data travels shorter distances.
  • Companies like Google, AWS, Microsoft, and Azure may invest here, creating opportunities for data centers, cloud hosting, and game servers.
  • Bangladesh could become a strategic technological hub with strong financial and diplomatic influence.

Risks and Concerns

Starlink wants no filtering or blocking for foreign traffic. This raises some issues:

  • The government may not be able to monitor or control the traffic passing through Bangladesh.
  • The link could be used for DDoS attacks, botnets, or harmful content.
  • Security measures of local ISPs may not work on transit links.
  • If any crime happens using this traffic, it is unclear which country is responsible.

Conclusion

Starlink gives Bangladesh a rare chance to become an internet gateway for South Asia. But the government must carefully weigh benefits against security and privacy risks.
